Some people should not be allowed to use the internet. As soon as I realized that I might not have the software necessary for the class I used the class bulletin board to ask the instructor at what point exactly I would need to have Windows, because I won't have the money to pay for it until I get my financial aid (which according to the school might not be until August). I asked him a couple other questions about the software we would need to make sure I had everything correctly set up once I did have the money. What was his answer? That I should get Windows "asap" and that the cost of Windows was only "a drop in the bucket" compared to what I was spending on my education overall.

Okay, yeah, true and true, but I already knew both those things, and neither one answered my questions. Asap is not a useful answer. Presumably if I got Windows on the last day of the class that would be too late. But what if that really was the soonest possible I could get it? Not helpful. And he's right, that in the large scheme of things the cost of Windows isn't all that great, but he just ignores the part where I tell him that I can't afford it at the moment, and won't be able to until I get my financial aid.

Now if we were actually talking face to face, it would be forgivable if he didn't answer all my questions in his first statement, because he has no way of being able to instantly access them word for word. But when they are typed out on the screen in front of him, I think he can take the trouble to actually answer each question, or at least ask for clarification if something wasn't clear. I think I deserved more than just "suck it up and move on".

So I've dropped the class and replaced it with another. I need that class, so I'll take it next quarter, but from a different instructor. In the mean time I'll squirrel away the money I need to buy Windows (there was no way for me to know I needed it until I had access to the online classroom on Saturday) but I'm hoping that I really don't need it. I think I know why we needed it for the class, and I have a couple months now to look for alternative software I might be able to use.

Rant mode now off.

Let me reminisce, if I may, about school as I remember it...

-Standing in line in the coliseum to register for classes.
-Typing my papers on my old Brother electric typewriter with correcting ribbon.
-Professors having office hours.
-In grad school, thinking that registering for classes via touchtone phone was the Best Invention Evah!

Can you believe what a dinosaur I am?

But seriously, if I was you, I'd be in that boat, too. Until I met hubby, I was strictly a Mac user. The only thing I do with Windows is open the Internet!
