Chapter 8:

When Lorne had first called Angel to tell him the world was about to end, Angel had wished that just for once the world could go on without him. But now that he was in the middle of a fight Angel was actually enjoying himself for the first time since Darla and Spike got into town. Fighting the members of this demon cult was turning out to be fun, if only he wasn't so worried about finding the man who was going to end the world in time.

Unfortunately Lorne wasn't much of a fighter. Although these demons weren't all that tough, there were a lot of them, and this fight was taking too long.

Then the worst thing Angel could have thought of happened. Out of nowhere Spike was there joining the fight. All right so it was the second worst thing that could have happened because at least Spike was fighting on the same side as Angel. But that didn't help with the basic problem.

Spike made Angel nervous, very nervous. He had ever since Spike and Dru had first waltzed into Sunnydale. At first Angel had been nervous because Spike and Dru represented some of the worst of Angelus' crimes. They were monsters of his making, and no matter what Angel did to atone for his past crimes, as long as the two of them were killing there would always be more blood on Angel's hands.

Then Angel lost his soul, and things hadn't gotten any better. Angelus wanted so much to be proud of his grand-childe. Spike had killed two Slayers and made quite a reputation for himself in the last hundred years.

Except then Spike was in a wheelchair, and Angelus couldn't help feeling a bit responsible for that. Guilt wasn't something that Angelus dealt with well, and to make matters worse, it seemed that the Slayer had not only broken Spike's body, but his will too. It took far too long for Spike to heal from his injuries. Angelus hadn't been able to understand why Spike wasn't out of the wheelchair sooner. So he heaped every cruelty he could think of on the younger vampire in the hopes that if he could make Spike mad enough, jealous enough, it would get him out of that chair. That was why he had denied Spike his affections, and even his blood. He wanted Spike to want to get better.

So when Angelus realized that it had all been a ploy and that Spike had been plotting against him the whole time, Angelus wasn't really all that hurt. In fact he was rather proud of the insolence Spike showed in his attempt to get Dru back, even if his plan was seriously flawed.

Nothing had happened since then that had made their relationship any easier. And now, fighting side by side with Spike, Angel was just as confused as ever. A part of himself that he hated to admit to, longed for the old days when the four of them had wandered Europe without a care in the world. And for just a moment, Angel couldn't help but wonder if it could be like that again, except without all the bloodshed. It was a ridiculous notion, he knew that neither Darla nor Spike could give up killing, and yet he couldn't help but think what a force they could be for good if only they could all get along.

Just like that the fight was over. Angel looked around the now ruined laboratory to find that the only demon left standing was the cocky blond British one who was looking at him like the cat that stole the canary.

"Well that was a bit of fun, yeah?" Spike asked as he brushed some blood off his face.

"I don't have time for this," Angel mumbled as he tried to leave the wrecked lab.

But before Angel could get to the door, Spike was there blocking his way. "Sorry, mate, can't let you do that."

"Spike. . . " Angel started, before realizing he'd already said that he didn't have time for this. "Look, this is no time to mess around-"

"Wasn't thinking of messing around," Spike interrupted him. "But now that you mention it. . ." Spike moved in closer to Angel, a mischievous grin in his eyes, and Angel wondered how Spike could stand that close to him without their bodies actually touching.

The worst part was that a certain part of Angel's anatomy seemed bent on bridging that gap, even though Angel knew Spike wasn't serious. And the fact that Spike could obviously smell how suddenly turned on he was, made things worse, not to mention that Spike wearing a tux added a whole new level of surrealism to the whole moment.

But looking into those annoying blue eyes, and those pretty, bloody lips, Angel couldn't help but think how nice it would be to kiss Spike, and how long it had been since he'd done so.

Luckily the world was about to end, so Angel really didn't have time for this.

"Look Spike, the world is about to end if I don't get out of here and stop it, so move!"

He tried to shove Spike out of his way, but the younger vampire was obviously ready for that, and although he was able to force Spike to take a step back, he was still very much in Angel's way.

"Sorry mate, I have my orders and all, can't let you leave. At least not yet."

Angel didn't have time to get into a wrestling match with Spike, so he tried another approach. "Wow, you and Darla have been together all of what, a week? And she already has you this pussy whipped? That's got to be a new record, even for you."

He could see the anger in Spike's eyes and couldn't help but smile.

"Yeah, well at least I'm getting some," Spike said sounding like a petulant child. "And Darla's just not any pussy after all, she's first class stuff."

Angel couldn't help but laugh at that. Trust Spike to have put Darla on a pedestal so high he could barely see her anymore.

"Please, you of all people should know she's nothing more than a whore. Any guys with a couple-" Angel didn't get to finish because Spike's fist and crashed into his mouth.

Mentally Angel cursed. He hadn't meant to get Spike to fight him, and yet he'd fallen into their old pattern so easily. The only difference was this time the girl was Darla and not Dru.

As Angel blocked a second punch and got in one of his own, he was vaguely aware of Lorne in the background trying to get their attention. And then suddenly the room was filled with one high pitched clear note that had both him and Spike clutching their ears in pain. The two vampires both turned to look at the green demon they had forgotten about.

"Listen boys," Lorne said. "Not that I don't appreciate the show of testosterone and sexual tension, but maybe we can save it for a time when the world isn't ending, hmm?"

"The world's not going to end," Spike said. He continued even as they tried to interrupt him. "Yeah, yeah, I know all about the nerd who can't keep a girl, but don't worry, Darla's on it. I'm just supposed to keep you here until she can stop him."

Suddenly things were twice as urgent as they'd been a moment before. Angel had no doubt that Darla could stop the grad student, but he also knew that she would do it by killing him, and even if they guy wasn't exactly innocent, he didn't deserve to die.

Angel shoved past Spike and ran out of the school and straight for his car. As he was opening the door to get in, Spike leaped over the shut door on the other side, and made himself at home in the passenger seat.

"Get out," Angel snarled, as he was forced to simply sit down in a much less cool way than Spike had. Not that he couldn't have leapt into the car, he didn't have the need to constantly show off like some people.

"And miss the show? Figure I kept you here long enough. This should be fun."

"Get out now!" Angel yelled.

"Look, mate. You can either sit here and argue with me and waste more time, or you can simply drive. Your call. I'm up for either one."

The only thing more annoying than Spike was Spike when he was right. With no other choice, Angel started up the car, waited for Lorne to get in, and drove off to stop Darla and save the guy who was going to end the world.

I'll just bet! I also like Lorne throwing in his two cents. We can all appreciate the manly display, but there's work to be done. Can't wait.

Hehe. Glad you liked Lorne. He's always tough for me to write. I never know if I'm using to many baking nicknames or two few.
