My really busy life
Aug. 31st, 2006 06:09 pmMy life's been so busy lately it's been. . . well, crazy. I hadn't even looked at LJ this week until I got an e-mail from
lawyergirl15 and i found out that my beloved RPG
wickedverse is going on hiatus because so many of the player's lives have gotten so busy recently. Under normal circumstances I'd be crushed by this, but the truth is, I'm so busy that I really don't have time for it either right now. Of course I don't think it's really sunk in yet. Probably because I'm running off of 3 hours of sleep.
In fact I was going to tell you how busy my life has been this week, but I have no idea what I was doing on Monday. Just that I was working, where? I don't know. I could go through my paper work and find out, but that's less dramatic.
Don't worry, since this is a really long, probably boring post, I've put in lots of nice cuts.
Tuesday I do remember. I was working as an audience member for Deal or No Deal, and it was a twelve hour day. I knew nothing about the show before working it, just that it was a game show. There are two things about the show, first of all it's basically pure luck. However there's a a psychological twist to it, that does make it very interesting to watch.
I'm not going to bother to explain how the game is played, for those who don't know, but the thing that really bothered me about the show was the 26 models they have on it. Basically instead of having one of those game show boards where the player chooses squares and reveals what's behind them, they have these models with briefcases who open up the briefcases to show what's in them.
There's no reason they need these models except to boost viewership by having 26 beautiful women in sexy dresses on every episode, and this really bothered me. As fun as the show was, almost every time they referred to the models they basically admitted that they're just there to look pretty.
Now I know there's kind of a history of this on game shows, but Vana White never offended me. Am I just too sensitive? I don't really think of myself as all that sensitive or easily offended, but this really bugged me. And I would probably watch the show if it wasn't for the models because it really is exciting.
Anyway, right at the beginning of my day on Tuesday, I got a call from Central Casting asking me if I'd like to work on Studio 60 (one of the new shows coming out in the fall) the next day. Normally you have to call them to get work, so I jumped at the chance even though Wednesday was supposed to be my day to do errands. (Including the very important errand of renewing the registration on my car. . . but I'll get to that). Anyway, the casting director told me I'd be called back with the details.
Well at the end of the day, I hadn't gotten a call back, so I wondered if I'd misunderstood and hadn't been booked on the job at all. I called the emergency line anyway to be safe (since it was 11:00 at night when I was done on Deal or No Deal) and found out that yes I had been booked. In fact I was replacing someone who'd cancelled. It was funny because I was neverosu about calling the emergency line because I was sure that I hadn't been booked and I would be bugging them, but if I hadn't called, I wouldn't have shown up and I would have been a no show and possibly fired (they're very strict about that sort of thing, even when it really isn't your fault.)
It turned out the call time was 7:30 the next morning, which meant I had to get up around 4:30 to get ready, which meant I was only going to get about four and a half hours sleep. Luckily, when I got up in the morning, I checked and they had changed the call time to 10:30 so I got several more hours sleep.
This wasn't all good though, because Studio 60 (even though it's a brand new show) is kind of famous for having really long days, and on Thursday I was scheduled to work a 6:00 am catering job. Sure enough it ended up being about a fourteen hour day for me, which meant I made lots of over time which was good, but means I only got about three hours sleep last night which is not so good.
However I'm glad I did the job. The basic premise of the show is that it's about a show much like SNL. I was cast as one of the staff writers, which I found kind of fun. Of course as my luck would have it, no one on the set knew why they needed a writer so when they were setting up shots, people would keep asking me "What are you supposed to be?" and when I told them they'd look at me like "Why exactly do we need a writer in this shot?" Actually they just needed me for one tiny little segment of a very complex shot that will probably get cut out. But it was still kind of cool because in that tiny bit I got to interact with Bradley Whitford (of West Wing fame). Of course all that happened is that he walks by me and we say hi to each other, but it was still fun.
Oh and Aaron Sorkin was on the set all day because it's his show. So that was pretty cool. But the best thing is there's a chance (all be-it a small one) that I'll get called back to the show. They like to use the same fake crew over and over again, and although they really didn't need me, since one of the main story lines of the show has to do with the writers they might need me again. They really like to use the same people over and over for the crew of the show. I was talking to a lot of those actors, and many of them have become eligible for SAG that way. So if I'm very lucky this might be a way for me to get into the union.
Oh, and some of those regular crew members, huge Buffy fans so we had something to talk about other than our fledgling acting careers.
So anyway, we got out last night at 1:00 am and like I said I had to be at work at 6:00 am this morning. So I got about three hours sleep. Of course it was a really easy breakfast shift and I should have been able to go to sleep by 10:30 but I had one big errand to do. Getting my car re-registered.
I should have been able to do this by mail, or even by the internet, but that only works if they mail you the registration info. I'm sure they did mail it to me, but someone made a typo when I got my driver's license and California registration and the DMV had switched two of the numbers in my address. I'm pretty sure it's there mistake not mine because I registered to vote at the same time, and I've gotten all my voter info since I moved here and it was the same form. So it got mistyped once.
Well, since I never got the paper work in the mail I had to go into the office, and I had to go in today because it's the last day of the month. I tried to figure out how much it was going to cost me, but since it depends on what kind of car you have, I couldn't, plus they don't tell you anything about re-registering in person cause they want you to do by mail, online or over the phone, none of which I could do because I didn't get the stupid form. Anyway, if you do register online you can pay with your credit card, so I assumed I'd be able to do that in the office to. It didn't say and I was running off only a little sleep so it didn't even occur to me to worry about it.
So right after my job I drove straight to the DMV office a few blocks from my house, but it was closed for some sort of special circumstances. I didn't really process what they were. So I drove home so I could look up how to get to the Glendale office on google.maps cause I had no idea where it was.
Off I went very hopeful and found the office. The only problem was, once I got to the front of the line, I found out they couldn't register me because they don't take credit cards if you come in person. Okay what's up with that? The annoying thing was that they have a machine for debit cards (which I don't have cause I'm always afraid of overdrawing my account by accident) but they couldn't take regular credit cards. WTF?!
The guy was really nice though and said that if I got the money today, I could simply come up to his window and he'd take care of it for me. So off I went. It wasn't until I got into my car that I realized I had no idea where to find a branch of my bank in Glendale. The branch I normally go to is half a block for the the DMV office that was closed. D'Oh!
So I called up my bank, suffered through the automated phone system, and found out the addresses of the branches in Glendale. Never found any of them though. Instead I got really lost and drove around forever, until I saw the tall tower of the Burbank Holiday Inn. Finally I knew where I was, and I knew there was a bank really close by, but I couldn't remember where. I knew my cousin would know, so I called her up, but I got her voicemail. I'd forgotten that she was flying to New York this weekend. As soon as I finished leaving her a message though, I found the bank. Yay!
The good news was it was $100 to register my car, and I had $106.26 in my bank account. The bad news is not that I now have $6.26 in my bank account, but that the reason I have so little is because I have at least $400 worth of paychecks at home that I've acquired since I last had the chance to go to a bank. Can someone please tell me why banks are so sadistic as to still be closed on Sundays? Don't we know that we're not all Christians in America? So I'll have to make another trip to the bank tomorrow.
Anyway, I finally got my car registered so no big fines or fears so being stopped by the police and having my care impounded.
So after all that I've been too wound up to sleep despite my tiredness and I have class in about an hour. By the time that's done I should be very ready to sleep, and I've been too tired to find a job for tomorrow so at least I can sleep in.
I did however watch Bones And I'm so glad this show is back. I love it. Not sure of what I think of the new character. She's kind of a cliche, or at least the whole power-struggle that went on was.
On the other hand I absolutely loved it when Booth told her "You're the human remains and she hasn't made up her mind yet." He was so threatening in a non-threatening way, very sexy.
And yes the Bones/Booth tension continues to build. There was another great awwww moment at the very end, and I so love these too.
On the other hand I'm not so sure about this whole complex thing with Bones' father. It allows some great character moments for her, but it just feels so complex and contrived. I guess I'll just have to see how it plays out.
And that's it. I have no more. Phew

Date: 2006-09-01 02:35 am (UTC)I'm sad about the WV as well, but given that we're all running in circles right now, it makes sense.
I'm so excited for you getting to shoot Studio 60! I love Bradley Whitford. It sounds like the extra gig is really going well, it's so fun to hear about.
Get some sleep!!!

Date: 2006-09-02 04:21 pm (UTC)Studio 60 looks like it's going to be a good show. Well, from the few little scenes I got to see. We did get to see one of the skits, and it was really funny, even on the 10th time they did it. I admit, by take 25 though, it wasn't as funny anymore. Just so you know, they didn't do it over and over again because people messed up (which is why I always assumed they did takes over) but because they had like a bazzillion camera angels, and five other things going on in the scene other than the skit.

I forgot to watch Bones :-( so thanks for the commentary. It wasn't too spoilery, but I get the idea.

Date: 2006-09-01 06:21 am (UTC)And sorry about your DMV adventure, but glad it worked out for you. I, too, just had a DMV adventure. I was in the airport, waiting to go through security (family trip to Hawaii) and the TSA lady wants to see some other ID because my license is expired. It was up on my birthday a few weeks earlier. I had no other ID but my credit card, and thank goodness she let me go.
Now I KNOW I never got a reminder in the mail, and that's how I renewed last time. So I go online, and because of identify theft, you now have to go to the DMV to renew in person. We got home from Hawaii on Friday night, and the DMV was closed on Monday. I finally get there on Tuesday and luckily there's an express line where I could renew. I only had to read 2 pages of my book before I got helped.
I tell ya, it's amazing any of us can drive with the stuff the DMV puts us through.
And re: Bones; I'm a little leery of the new gal, too. I got a bit tired of all the snark flying around, but they do have me curious about the possibility of her history with Booth.
Continue to keep us posted on how things are going. Hope you get those checks in the bank soon!

Date: 2006-09-02 04:26 pm (UTC)The DMV is evil. At least back in Boulder I had a friend who worked there, so life was a little easier.
As for Bones, the thing that annoyed me most about the new lady was the cliched way she went to bat for them at the end. Okay, sure cliches exist for a reason, but I think it would have been nice if there had been a little more time before they found out that she could be good for them and on their side.
And the checks are now in the bank. If only Central Casting had a direct deposit system, cause I get a check for each individual day I worked. Makes it hard to keep up.
