I know this isn't cannon (as in from the show) but what would people say are the rules for claiming? I'm dealing with it in one of my stories, and feel caught up in the mechanics. Mostly I'm trying to figure out what in a bite makes it a claiming.

So what are your opinions? I know there isn't a hard and fast rule, and I can make it work however I please in my story, I just haven't figured out what will work best in my story yet.

I don't write any fiction myself, but I read tons of it. One of the things I noticed is usually either party says 'Mine' when biting. And it's usually during some pRon. *grin*

You may not be a writer, but considering all the wonderful sites you have, I think you count as an expert. (Thanks by the way. I don't know how you do it, but if people like you didn't create archives, people like me would have a hard time finding readers. Plus, you make really pretty pictures.)

I had forgotten about the verbal component. That would work well in my story. Thanks. I hadn't forgotten about the. . . pRon. That is certainly an essential ingredient.

Just please, for the love of god, do NOT have them "roar" mine during orgasm.

So here's my dilemma. I need a claiming that is interrupted before it takes effect. Spike bits Buffy, and starts the claim, but there need to be some missing ingredient that makes it not happen.

If it makes you feel better, the way I have the scene written so far, they couldn't roar mine during orgasm (It would have to happen after) but I kind of liked the idea of a verbal component. Mostly because there's going to be a much latter scene with Buffy and Wesley where Buffy asks him to explain what a claiming is. I had thought up this whole long speech on work magic that Wesley could give. But I'm not committed to that idea.

So basically, what I need to figure out, is what makes a bite a claiming bite, and not just a regular, 'Ummmm nasty snack' bite. (Other than the sex of course).

Why yes, I do see your dilemma.

I try to change my "claims" in each fic, the rules, etc. In one of my fics, Catching the Night, I had Spike claim Buffy but it wasn't a complete one because she didnt return it until halfway through the fic.

So basically, what I need to figure out, is what makes a bite a claiming bite, and not just a regular, 'Ummmm nasty snack' bite. (Other than the sex of course).

from what I can gather, it's intent. Mostly Spike's demon trying to take possession, and sometimes it can just be words of love or something. Fics I've read lately that play with that theme are bittenandstaked Love in Vein,(buffy claims Spike, that was a first!) Patti's challenge fic Are we Friends? and wow, pretty much every fic on the BSV...

You can have the bite, and before Spike's demon tries to take possession,(can even be some sort of growling) they can be interrupted.

What I've come to find is there are NO rules concerning claiming. That's what makes it so much fun. Plus... hot. Possessive!Spike.... yummy.... :)

Although I like your ideas on intent, they don't entirely fit my story, because the intent is definitely there on both parts. I think I'm going to go with it being something verbal that's missing. But I want something other than the word 'mine'. I kind of like the idea that saying her name (with the intent to claim) right after the bite is what completes it. This way it could be a name magic kind of thing. And now I'm back to intent again.

do what I did in Some Cold Lovin, Las Vegas Style and have some "latin" words be responsible for completing the claim. That certain latin binding phrase could be missing...?

So many ways to do it...

I was thinking about this...the verbal component is the big thing. However since you want it to be interrupted, I was thinking something sort of cute, but realistic for Buffy. Well not "cute, cute". Anyway, ever seen "Bullets over Broadway"? No? Well classic line...there is this broadway diva that asks someone a question or wants someone to answer her, but then she puts her finger to their lips and says, "Don't speak...no..shushh..don't speak." lol So perhaps during the porn "act" maybe Spike starts to say, "MMM..." and Buffy goes, "Shhh...don't speak..."!!!! just a suggestion. Would work in this case.

The shushing idea is pretty funny. However, I already know how the interruption happens. Sometimes those Slayer instincts are a bad thing. I might work it in latter though. There's another scene where I think Buffy may ask Spike to claim her because she's upset about something, but then she may change her mind. Of course that's a ways a way and whenever I plan that far in advance, things always change.
