I'm not really here.
Jul. 14th, 2005 09:00 pmHey guys. This is me in L.A. I know I said I wouldn't have internet access, and in fact I don't. But someone in my cousins apartment building does, and I can hijack there wireless signal. It's kind of unreliable though, it goes in and out, so I probably won't update any stories till I get back.
I'm also not really paying attention to all the internet goings on, because I'm really busy. Although I've been trying to unwind by getting some writing done.
I have to say, I love L.A. and I'm really excited about moving here, although I'm starting to wonder if the landlords out here actually want to rent their apartments. A lot of stuff I understand, like wanting to run a credit check, charging the person for it (so they don't have to pay for them on people who aren't serious about the appartment) and even wanting a money order instead of a check. But can't they call me back to arrange a time to see the places?! I literally placed over 50 calls today and heard back from about 5 people. But I do have appointments to see a couple places tomorrow morning, and hopefully more people will call be back tomorrow.
The drvining's not too bad here. I've been avoiding the rush hour traffic because I can, but the streets are laid out pretty logically in most places, and it's not to confusing. Of course it helps that my cousin I'm staying with is a traffic reporter, so she's given me lots of tips on how to get around and what areas to avoid.
The people here have been really nice too. Not so much when they are driving, but the girl at the car rental place had just moved here from Colorado herself and we talked for a while. I was also standing outside an appartment building today, about to call the number on a 'For Rent' sign when a guy from the gas company stopped me and asked me if I was looking for an apartment in the area. When I told him yes he gave me the addresses of a bunch of places that were for rent (I guess these were places where he'd just shut off the gas) and we talked for a while. I also ended up talking with some landscapers while I was waiting for the building manager to come show me an apartment. They were really nice too, although the manager definitely had a, 'Why are you inconveniencing me by making me show this apartment' air about her.
I have to say, my cousins, are driving me a little crazy. We haven't seen each other in over ten years, so I get them being excited, but it's like they want to do everything in the week I'm here looking for apartments. I keep having to remind them that I'm moving here and we'll have plenty of time to catch up. Luckily they both work two jobs so they're really busy, and I finally managed to get some time alone today. Still it's great seeing them, and they have been a lot of help.
