icemink: (Buffy comic by maharet83)

So I broke down the other day and picked up pretty much all the Buffy Season 8 . Not quite all, I didn't get Buffy number 4, and all though I'm mildly curious how the first story line finished, I fined that I don't really care about it all that much. However, I really loved . This story said kind of fabulous things about both Buffy and Giles, and was a marvelous use of Faith. Here's the fascinating thing, while Faith is getting ready to have to kill a person, Buffy is almost blasé about the possibility that she and the other Slayers may have to kill human's if that army attacks them. Even the the assumption is that Faith is the killer (which of course she is) Buffy is potentially every bit as much the killer Faith is. We also see it in the flashback of Buffy stabbing Faith. She was more than willing to kill Faith to save Angel. Which brings up the question, is Giles keeping Buffy out of the loop because he's protecting her innocence, or because he's afraid of what she might become?

Then we get an in between issue, #9 I have to say, not so impressed. My biggest problem was the Buffy as Jewel thief story line. Not that I can't see Buffy ending up at that point, it just seems like she got there rather quickly. When we consider how long she and Dawn scrapped by on nothing, it seems like a big step for her to start stealing to support all the Slayers so quickly. Especially when it would be pretty well excepted that they've taken over the resources of the Watcher's Council, which were always implied to be vast. I did kind of like the bit about Kennedy, even though I'm not a huge Kennedy fan. It almost made brining Warren back worth it, to get that revelation out of Willow that she feels that she chose Buffy over Tara. Almost, not quite.

And there there was issues 11-15 were the comic becomes fanfic. First there's Renee/Xander. Which becomes kind of pointless because Renee dies way too soon. Maybe they killed her so that we'd at least feel that several Slayers were dying durning the big battle. But yeah, too soon for it to really hit home in more than a, "That sucks for Xander" kind of way. Of course there's also Xander/Dracula. Didn't quite work for me, but that's only because they weren't willing to give into the only thing that makes them keeping in touch make sense, and that's slash. Of course one would wonder why Xander would take Renee to meet his gay lover but. . .

And of course there is Buffy/Satsu. At first this bothered me because much like the jewel heist, I thought it was there in Buffy, but it just all came to soon. The more I've thought about it, the more I like it however. Not because I'm about to shipping Buffy/Satsu, but because I can see this really great Spuffy story where Buffy realizing how her loneliness drove her to use Satsu, realizes she needs to let Spike back in her life.

I have to agree with you that the S8 comics (outside of the Faith/Giles arc, have been crap.

Giant!Dawn? wtf? It's just to goofy for words. I like goofy. I want to like this goofy but it is almost too much for me. I'll keep buying the comics and shaking my head, but I am really disappointed with them. I keep hoping that they go back to what Giles and Faith are up to.

Buffy/Satsu. 0_0 I don't buy it at all. It feels too convenient and very ooc for Buffy. Not that I can tell Joss that he's being ooc... lol.

Have you been reading the Angel After the Fall comics? Bc they are really quite good. They are supposed to be doing a Spike After the Fall version too (though I am sure you already know about it I just have to squee a little. *g*)

Sorry to rant! :/

*hugs tight*

Yeah, I haven't figured out the giant Dawn thing either. I'm hoping there really is a point and not just, 'Hey! Look what we can do in a comic book.'

I think one of the reasons Buffy/Satsu feels ooc is cause the comics move too quickly. In retrospect I can see where they've been trying to build the idea that Buffy is so alone and isolated. And when she breaks down in tears about everyone who loves her dying, I think they were trying to push how emotionally vulnerable she is, but there just wasn't time for it to sink in before she hoped in bed with Satsu.

I did catch up on A:AtF at the same time. They are good, although not so much that I'm enraptured by them. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens, although other than the Gunn story nothing's really grabbed me there yet. I only just heard of the Spike After the Fall, and that should definitely be fun.

And don't worry about the rant. Only a very foolish person would post about the comics without knowing she was opening herself up to possible rants ;)
