So this morning we woke up to the sounds of a baby raccoon that was stuck way up in a tree by our house. The poor little guy got herself stuck upside down in the tree, and was making kitten like sounds, hoping someone would help her. Well, it worked cause someone (I'm ashamed to say it wasn't us) called Animal Control and they sent someone over to help the raccoon.

So I showed the really nice Animal Control guy to our roof. There was no way he could really get close to the raccoon because he couldn't quite get to the tree the raccoon was in, so he had to stand on the roof and use one of those big dog catchers nets and another metal pole to try and pry the tree limbs apart from a distance. (Not to mention the fact that you don't really want to get too near an upset raccoon, even a young one.)

After a long time he managed to pry the raccoon loose. Unfortunately the raccoon fell all the way to the ground. The Animal Control guy said it was probably because the raccoons feet had fallen asleep from being stuck that way so long. Luckily the tree had lots of lower branches to help break the raccoons falls, and the ground below was pretty soft. We went down to check on the raccoon, and she seemed mostly all right. Her back wasn't broken like we'd feared because her tail and all her legs were moving. She couldn't seem to walk on one of her back feet though. The Animal Control guy was a little worried that it might be broken (in which case they'd have to euthanize her) but he said it could be the foot was simply asleep and that it was just tingling too much for her to walk on.

So he gave me his card and asked me to check on the raccoon later and see if she was still there. I just did, and she was gone, so it looks like her leg wasn't broken and she's gone home to sleep and rest up. I just hope that means she'll be okay, because although I didn't want to call the Animal Control guy back, I don't like the thought that she simply crawled off to die someplace else. But probably she's okay.
